On the 6.7L Powerstroke, the factory crank gear is an interference-fit design with no keyway, pin, or welded retention. In higher-load applications — trucks running larger injection pumps, added fuel system drag, heavy towing, or increased power — the crank gear can slip on the crankshaft. When that happens, cam timing falls out of alignment with crankshaft position, triggering a P0016 code and, in severe cases, causing major engine damage. This tool locates directly off the crankshaft snout, balancer dowel pin, and crank OD to give you a clean, repeatable top dead center reference every time.
